Julie’s Post Olympic Challenge – River Humber Butterfly World Record Swim 2013
Following Julie’s successful butterfly swim around Manhattan Island in 2011, there is no stopping the ‘Madfish’ as she attempts to make her 21st World Record by swimming the length of the River Humber on butterfly this July. Dr. Julie Bradshaw MBE has been breaking records since her first solo English Channel swim in 1979. Her butterfly exploits began in 1991 when she swam Windermere. Therefore, in her 21st year of swimming long distance butterfly, Julie plans to make it “Record Number 21” and she is yet again swimming for Rainbows. Originally planned for Olympic Year, Julie’s swim is now set for 2013 due to the awful summer weather conditions of 2012
The River Humber is cold compared to her ‘hot’ swim in the USA last year. The Humber is very fast flowing which means her swim start has to be timed ‘just right’ Her experienced boat captain will be Pete Winchester, the King of the Humber with 68 swims over 35 years. However, no one has swam it using the hardest stroke the butterfly which means Julie will be the first person in the world to conquer the 12 mile stretch of water using that stroke.
